In this episode, I discuss whether you need a computer to run a real estate investing business. I was recently asked by a listener whether or not I think he could start and run a real estate investing business without a computer. The answer might surprise you!
I recently received an email from a listener of the podcast. I had done a short coaching call with him the day before. He was trying to get his real estate investing business off the ground, and we had a really good conversation about it. The next day, he sent me an email thanking me for spending time talking with him, and asked me whether or not I felt like it was possible for him to start his business without a home computer; it isn’t financially possible for him to get one right now, but he wants to start his investing business right away. My answer to him was yes, you definitely can start and run a real estate investing business without a computer. I should add that he does have a smartphone. I told him that he could absolutely get started and run his business using just his smartphone for now. I suggested that when it becomes financially possible, he should try to get a computer.
I thought about that email and my response over the next few days. I have started to come to the conclusion that it is not necessary to have a computer to run your real estate business. That’s not to say that having a computer wouldn’t be more convenient and make things a little easier; it certainly would. But the last thing I would want anyone to do is to put off starting their real estate investing business because they didn’t have their own computer. I use my computer most days in my business. I can tell you, however, that I use my smartphone way more than I use my laptop for my business. I can do almost everything I want to do on my smartphone. With smartphones nowadays, there isn’t much that you can’t do. Having a laptop just adds a level of convenience and a bigger screen. The actual work can get done on a smartphone for the most part.
There are several ways to get work done that require the Internet or the functionality that certain programs offer. Below I have listed the sources that you can use to get on the Internet, communicate and get work done. I’m sure there are more than these few examples, but I wanted to at least show you that, even without having your own computer, there are ways to get the job done!
- Internet Café
- Friend/significant other’s computer
The bottom line is: do not let the lack of a computer stop you from getting started in your real estate investing business. People have been investing in real estate long before the personal computer. You can definitely make it work and get around any issues that might arise as a result of not having a computer. The idea in this business, as well as any business, is to not let hurdles stop you from reaching your goal. Not having a computer is a small hurdle, but certainly not an insurmountable problem.
If you want to be a real estate investor you have to find your way around challenges that will arise!
